Chance was a wealthy casino owner who was born into a rich family. He had enough resources to establish his own casino, which he eventually opened. Naturally, he began gambling as well, since he was both wealthy and the owner of the establishment.
After some time, he began to feel a deep sadness. He didn’t fully understand its cause, but it led to many sleepless nights and worried his friends, including Elliot. Sometimes, Elliot would find him drunk from alcohol because of how he was feeling.
Chance's life took a turn when he overheard a fellow gambler discussing a drug that claimed to cure negative emotions. Naive and desperate, he decided to seek out the dealer and purchased some for himself, keeping the purchase a secret from anyone who might question him.
Thus begins Chance's experience with drug use; at times, he would even overdose and find himself in the hospital, easily paying the bills since he was always so wealthy.
One time, Elliot caught Chance taking drugs in his pizza place. Elliot's eyes widened when he saw what was happening. He hurried over to Chance's table and took the drugs from his hands.
"Seriously, Chance? Are you really taking drugs? Why?"
"Look, Ellie, I just—" Chance started to explain, but stopped himself when he saw the disappointment in Elliot's eyes. It was painful to face the reality of the situation, but he knew he had been caught, and now he had to deal with the consequences.
"How long have you been taking the drugs, Chance?" Elliot looked him directly in the eye, knowing this was a serious topic.
“Around a few months? Shit, I don’t know, at least a year by now…” Chance admitted, feeling ashamed.
"And you didn’t think I could help you overcome your addiction?" Elliot asked, concerned for Chance.
“I didn’t think you would understand—” Chance began, but Elliot interrupted him.
"Chance, we've been through everything together, and you think I can't understand your problem?" Elliot said quietly. He knew that Chance rarely confided in anyone about his struggles. "Have you even tried contacting professional help?" he asked suddenly.
“No, I highly doubt there’s anyone who can help with this… feeling,” Chance explained.
"What do you feel, Chance?" Elliot asked, taking on the role of a therapist.
"Empty, apathetic, like I don’t have anything to care about in this world." Chance looked at Elliot, "Besides you, I care about you," he admitted with sincerity. "Oh, and Spade!" Chance smiled at the thought of his rabbit back at home.
“Oy, pizza boy! Mind taking our order?!” a customer interrupted the emotional moment. Chance looked irritated, but Elliot simply gave one last glance at Chance.
"That's my cue. I'll see you later, Chance," Elliot said with a smile as he left Chance to enjoy his pizza.
After Chance and Elliot's conversation in the pizzeria, and after Chance had gone gambling again, he lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. "Is Elliot right? Can I really stop this?" Chance wondered as he turned his head to look at the pill bottle in his hands. His thoughts drifted back to the conversation with Elliot and the disappointed expression on Elliot's face.
"Fuck, I really want to stop, but these things are my only hope of maintaining myself," he said as if Elliot were there. Chance felt exhausted, weary of all of this.
He returned to his casino, trying to gamble his worries away. However, some shady individuals approached him, offering a way to improve his situation without resorting to drugs.
